Self-discipline means to control one’s feelings and overcome one’s weaknesses. This can apply to anything whether it is our work, exercise, diet etc. Meditation can help our self- discipline. Regular practice of meditation enhances our discipline and commitment.Jon Kabat-Zinn has said that you don’t have to enjoy your meditation ,just commit to it and the benefits will unfold .He has also said in meditation we “befriend ourselves as we are”,hanging out with ourselves in awareness. What can get in the way of self-discipline are excuses or blanking out what we need to do and doing something else.We need to stop giving our excuses any power. With meditation we can improve our self discipline, even if it means talking ourselves into doing just five minutes of meditation and then adding five more minutes etc. This will also strengthen our discipline in other areas of our life!Psychologist Brian Galla who published a study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology says people with good self control also have good habits, like doing the same positive activity at the same time each day.
